Having looked at Whitney Houston’s chart in the previous post, I was curious about the T-square involving Sun, Saturn, and Neptune. It occurred to me to look at the chart of River Phoenix, whose death had a similar impact on his fans and the news media. I had looked at his chart at the time (1993) and it must have stuck in my subconscious because, sure enough, he has a T-square involving the same three planets as Whitney Houston. Here is his chart.
Like Houston, Phoenix has Neptune in Scorpio (craving for intoxicants), but his Neptune lies in his 1st house rather than his 8th. Phoenix’s Neptune opposes his Moon/Saturn conjunction in Taurus in the 7th, and this opposition is square his Sun/Mars conjunction in the 10th (Sun in early Virgo, Mars in late Leo).
River Phoenix has Gemini on the cusp of his 8th house, thus Mercury rules his death. Mercury lies in his 11th house of friends where it closely conjoins Pluto, the modern ruler of his ASC and the dispositor of Neptune in Scorpio in the 1st. Morin teaches that the 8th ruler conjoining the 1st ruler means that the native plays an active role in his own death. Uranus is the modern ruler of his 4th cusp (family) and occupies the 11th house (friends). Phoenix died among family and friends. The 4th cusp rules conditions at the end of life. With the modern ruler of the 4th in the 11th, he will die among friends. Saturn, the traditional ruler of the 4th, occupies the 7th house, suggesting that a close partner (in this case, his girlfriend) may be with him at the end.
His Moon conjoins the 8th house Placidus cusp, and thus with Mercury is a signifier of his death. The Moon opposing Neptune is consistent with death by a drug overdose. Moon in the 7th can indicate the presence of an intimate partner at the time of death. His girlfriend was with him when he died. The Moon conjunct Saturn, ruler of the 3rd, can mean he will be with siblings during his final moments.
On 13 November 1993 the New York Times reported: “The sudden death of the actor River Phoenix outside a Hollywood nightclub two weeks ago was caused by “acute multiple drug intoxication” involving lethal levels of cocaine and morphine, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office said today … toxicological tests had found not only the deadly levels of cocaine and morphine but also traces of marijuana, the prescription sedative Valium and an over-the-counter cold medication.” Family and friends were with him when he collapsed and died, including his younger sister Rain, his brother Joaquin, his girlfriend Samantha Mathis, and other friends.
