The killing of an unarmed black youth, Trayvon Martin, in Sanford, Florida on 26 February 2012 at about 7 pm has become a media frenzy. The killer, George Zimmerman, appears to have been an overzealous member of the neighborhood watch who was carrying a gun despite police instructions not to do so. Zimmerman explained in a 911 call: “This guy looks like he’s up to no good. Or like he’s on drugs or something. It’s raining and he’s just walking around, looking about.” Zimmerman only mentioned Trayvon’s race when he was specifically questioned about it by the 911 operator.
Zimmerman’s point-blank shooting of Martin was “justified” under the Florida “stand your ground” law, which allows people who feel in imminent danger to kill first and ask questions later, especially if they are “just walking around, looking about.” This law was apparently passed despite objections from the police who presented evidence that it was totally unnecessary and could lead to the killing of innocent persons, as happened in the Trayvon Martin case. Thank god I don’t live in Florida and I can pretty much avoid visiting there. If I yell at someone for stepping on my foot in Florida, they have a legal right to shoot me dead if they feel in imminent danger because of the angry tone of my voice.
A look at the charts of Martin and Zimmerman and the chart for the time of the killing is quite interesting from an astrological perspective.
At 7 pm on 26 Feb 2012 when the shooting took place, 16 Virgo 47 was on the Ascendant in Sanford, Florida, and Mars was just rising at 15 Virgo 56 Rx. Mars is peregrine (without dignity) here and is disposed by Mercury, ruler of Virgo. In Pisces Mercury is doubly debilitated, being in both detriment and fall. At the same time Mars in Virgo lies opposite Mercury in Pisces. Symbolically the prevailing astrological winds at 7 pm in Sanford favored activities related to a debilitated just risen Mars (firearms, killing, aggression).
If we look at Mars (15 Virgo 56 Rx on 26 Feb 2012) and the shooting Ascendant (16 Virgo 47 on 26 Feb 2012) in the natal charts of the two individuals involved, we see some interesting symbolism. I don’t have birth times for either individual, so I cast chart with Noon positions and the Sun on the ASC with equal houses to represent their natal charts.
Focusing on the positions of Mars and the ASC at the time of the shooting, we find that they fall on the 8th house cusp of death of Trayvon’s chart, in quincunx to his natal Sun, which disposes his natal Mars in Leo.
The positions of Mars and the ASC at the time of the shooting fall in Zimmerman’s unfortunate 12th house. In addition, Pluto from the shooting chart squares Zimmerman’s natal Sun, suggesting that George was feeling embattled and feeling a need to pit his will against others in the kind of life and death struggle signified by Pluto. This Pluto theme is reinforced by transiting Saturn closely conjoining his natal Pluto during this period.
Zimmerman’s natal Mars happens to be in Virgo, so it is activated by transiting Mars at the time of the shooting. Virgo is a somewhat uncomfortable position for Mars. The fierce warrior of the zodiac does not like being dominated by a Virgin and may feel a need to prove how macho he really is by killing the bad guys.
Zimmerman’s natal Mars in Virgo is disposed by his natal Mercury, dignified in Virgo, so he is certainly capable of analytic thinking. Unfortunately Mercury conjoins the emotional Moon and squares nebulous Neptune, so his powers of discrimination are weakened and strongly colored by his emotions and fantasies. Zimmerman’s Mars is also closely square Chiron in early Gemini, an aspect that is usually interpreted as having a short fuse as well as difficulties with proper self-assertion.
From looking at Zimmerman’s chart, it seems to me that he is not so much a racist as a man who feels a sense of personal inadequacy and powerlessness and a need to overcompensate by acting overly macho and aggressive. As mentioned above, this conflict may be symbolized by his natal Mars in Virgo: I’m not a gentle virgin, I’m really a powerful warrior and I’ll prove it to you.
The theme of the overcompensating macho warrior is typified in the character Rambo, portrayed by actor Sylvester Stallone who also happens to have his natal Mars in Virgo. In Stallone’s chart Mars is disposed by Mercury in Leo, which is in partile conjunction with Pluto in dramatic Leo, suggesting a person (like Rambo) who seeks admiration for his powerful macho prowess.
Addendum: On April 11, 2012, Zimmerman was charged with 2nd degree murder. This occurred around 6 pm in Florida. He will make his first court appearance at 1:30 pm on Thursday, April 12. Interestingly, these events occur as transiting Mars is turning stationary direct. The exact station occurs on Friday, 13 April 2012, at 3 Virgo 40, almost exactly conjunct his natal Mars (at 3 Virgo 23 in the sunrise chart).
Addendum (12 July 2012): I just read an article about Zimmerman that confirms many of the comments I made above in looking at his chart last April. Most notably the State Attorney’s Office released documents and evidence today that:
“Zimmerman never got along with his mother and that the women in his family “exercised a lot of control over” him.”
“In nearly 300 pages of documents and other evidence newly released by the Florida State Attorney’s Office in its second-degree murder case against George Zimmerman, Zimmerman appears at once absolved of racial animus in the killing of Trayvon Martin, but also as a man whose life has been complicated by a ‘hero complex’ and haunted by abusive personal relationships.”
