Santorum Drops Out of Race

Today (April 10, 2012) Rick Santorum announced that he was dropping out of the Republican race for the presidential nomination of the party.  According to Newsmax.com, Santorum said that the reason “he was bowing out now had little to do with the almost certainty of defeat, but because of the worsening illness of his youngest daughter, 3-year-old Bella.”

His daughter suffers from a rare life-threatening genetic disorder.  She became ill on Good Friday and was hospitalized for the second time this year.  Santorum spent Easter weekend with Bella in the hospital.  Fortunately, she is now out of the hospital but the worsening of Bella’s illness apparently convinced Santorum to end his campaign.

To see what was going on astrologically, I superimposed the transits for today and his upcoming Solar Return on his sunrise natal chart (time unknown).

Santorum: Sunrise Natal Chart with Current Transits and Upcoming Solar Return superimposed

The most striking feature of the current transit chart is that transiting Uranus today is crossing natal Venus in the 12th house.  Because the exact time of birth is unknown, it is not clear how exact the conjunction is, but it is clearly very close.  Uranus transits often time events rather well.

Uranus symbolizes sudden changes, breaks, and disruptions.  Using Placidus cusps in the natal solar chart, Venus lies in the 12th of hospitalization very near the cusp.  Santorum unexpectedly spent the weekend with his daughter in the hospital.  Natal Venus also rules his Taurus Sun, so that Uranus transiting Venus would signify a disruptive event that would affect him very personally.  If we were to use equal houses from the Sun, Venus would rule his 5th house of children and directly represent his daughter who became ill last Friday.

With Virgo intercepted in the Placidus 5th house of the sunrise chart, Mercury also symbolizes his daughter.  Natal Mercury, like Venus, lies in the 12th house.  Transiting Saturn applies to oppose Mercury and gets even closer to the opposition in his upcoming Solar Return.  The impending opposition of transiting Saturn to his natal Mercury is worrisome, and I certainly hope it does not portend a worsening of his daughter’s condition.  Saturn rules the natal MC, which happens to be the derived 6th house of illness of his 5th house daughter.  The opposition of Saturn to Mercury suggests that his daughter’s illness will be disruptive to his career.

Transiting Chiron is applying to conjoin natal Mars, which is usually an indication for one to reassess one’s ambitions and pursuits in life in light of one’s true goals.  Mercury (a signifier of his daughter) closely conjoins his natal Lunar South Node, suggesting a karmic lesson to be confronted involving his children.

Although some news stories suggest that Santorum is simply using his daughter’s illness to save face, his chart suggests that his decision to leave the race truly is motivated by his concern for his daughter.  As a parent myself, I can understand how he must be feeling at this time.  Although I disagree with his political views and belief system, I wish him the best with his family.  He and Bella will be in my prayers.

    hi anthony,
you have either given a good argument for solar houses, or for working more with close aspects in some sort of uranian fashion.. since we don’t know the time of santorums actual birth, relying on solar houses is a good place to start when considering a chart.. i am surprised it isn’t used more often especially when you think of the sun as being so central to life and the interplay of planets, symbolically and literally.

    • James,
Thanks for your observations. When the time is not known, I often use a sunrise chart for the location of birth. Sometimes I use Placidus houses at sunrise and sometime a equal house chart with Sun on the ASC or else whole sign houses with the Sun in the 1st. These are just symbolic charts but they often give useful information. Even when I know the birth time, I tend to look at a sunrise chart to see how it confirms or contrasts with the actual birth time. For average values of planetary locations with an unknown birth time, I cast a chart for Noon and put the Sun on the ASC with equal houses.
      Take care,
      Tony
