On dying young

Today I had a conversation with a young acquaintance who had recently lost his best friend.  Sadness was evident in his face and posture.  It was the first time in his life that he had lost someone close to him.  His friend, a graduate student, was found dead in bed for no apparent reason.   The autopsy did not reveal any clear-cut cause of death.  The family was devastated.  As I heard the story, I was reminded of the lines from A.E. Housman’s poem To an Athlete Dying Young:

To-day, the road all runners come,
Shoulder-high we bring you home,
And set you at your threshold down,
Townsman of a stiller town.

I wondered what was going on in the chart of my young friend at this time of loss and grief in his life.  I will not list his birth data and have omitted the personal planets from his natal chart.  Basically, I am writing this post by way of catharsis to try to come to terms with the tragic and senseless loss of someone so young with such a promising future.  The significant astrological events that stood out were the following.

My young friend has Capricorn rising.  Virgo on the cusp of his 8th house cusp gives his Mercury a connection with death.  Sagittarius on his 11th house cusp makes Jupiter the ruler of his friends.  Cancer on his 6th house cusp makes the Moon the ruler of his friend’s death (the 6th is the 8th of death of the 11th of friends).

He has currently been going through a difficult period as transiting Saturn has been passing back and forth over his natal Pluto.  At the time of death of his friend, transiting Moon (ruler of his friend’s death) was conjunct his natal 11th house cusp of friends.

Inner wheel: natal chart.Outer wheel: Solar Arc directed chart for date of friend's death.

Inner wheel: natal chart.
Outer wheel: Solar Arc directed chart for date of friend’s death.

On the day of his friend’s death, his solar arc directed Pluto was conjunct the natal 11th house cusp and exactly square his natal sun in Pisces.  Directed Pluto square natal sun perfected the same day that his friend passed on.  In addition, his solar arc directed Sun was square his natal 12th house Placidus cusp and square the mid-point of his natal Mars/Saturn conjunction.  At the time of his friend’s demise, the Mars/Saturn conjunction had moved to the natal ASC by solar arc direction.

In addition, his secondary progressed Saturn was exactly conjunct his natal 12th house Placidus cusp (grief, sadness) and square his progressed Sun within 23 minutes of arc.  At the same time his secondary progressed Moon was square his natal Sun (within 18′ of arc).

In his current solar return for his place of residence, the Sun was conjunct the cusp of the 6th house (opposing the 12th house cusp of grieving), natal Jupiter (his friend) was conjunct the natal 8th of death, and his natal Saturn/Mars conjunction straddled the SR IC.

    Dear Anthony,

I discovered your blog when an astrologer friend of mine recommended your book on Solar Return few weeks back. One of things that struck me about your blog was the presence of several posts on death. Incidently around the same time (couple of days back) a member on a Bazi (chinese astrological system) forum predicted that there is a likelihood that I might meet some fatal accident, and my life is in grave danger till Feb 2014. This as you might guess, has spooked me quite a bit, with a mixture of feelings. It would be a great help if you can have a look at my chart and give your esteemed advice on the matter.

    My birth details are – april 13th 1975, 8.10am, 26n28, 80e20, india (+5.5) [gender – male, if that helps]

Thank you so much for your help.

    • Alfred,

I don’t know why astrologers give such dire predictions that only serve to frighten people. We all confront stressful aspects in our charts and usually manage to get through them okay. I took a quick look at your chart and I don’t see that your life is in grave danger or that you will suffer a fatal accident. I suspect that your astrologer was looking at your solar return for this year (April 2013 – April 2014). I assume he is a Vedic astrologer and I do not know enough about Vedic techniques to know what he was considering.

Feb 2014 is significant because transiting Pluto opposes your natal Saturn on Feb 15, 2014. This is likely to be a stressful period for you (the early months of 2014). Saturn occupies your 2nd house of income, so money may be tight. Saturn rules your 9th and 10th houses, so there may be stressful career changes or problems with foreign interest or in-laws that trouble you. Long-distance travel can be taxing, though you may need to travel by air or to a distance during the coming year, perhaps out of duty or some family obligation.

While I don’t see a fatal accident or anything that dire, there could be some health issues that need attention. In the solar return, Pluto lies on the cusp of the 6th house and Neptune on the cusp of the 8th. Solar return Saturn lies on the natal 12th cusp and SR Mars on the natal 8th cusp. These configurations sometimes indicate a need for surgery or a hospital stay during the year. They could also indicate a period of grieving, such as due to a death in the family. These are only possible manifestations and there is no guarantee that any of this will happen. The most likely time for any such events in late summer or early fall. Transiting Saturn opposes your natal moon in September of 2013 and transiting Pluto makes a station in the 8th house then. Thus, September in particular is likely to be an emotionally trying time.

Those are the worst things I see in the year ahead. The most stressful times appear to be around Sept of 2013 and Feb of 2014. I’m sure you get though it but there will be some challenges to face.

Maybe you need to find a less “gloom and doom” astrologer for future consultations. Let me know how things work out as the year progresses.

      Tony

    Hi Tony,

Thank you so much for your reply. I was quite worried about the entire reading and felt extremely anxious. Although I was at Norwich, UK at the Solar return which changes things (probably for the worse), giving saturn in the 6th house and pluto on the cusp of 8th house.

    Will keep you posted.

    Thanks a lot.

    Dear Tony,
    I’m interested on your analysis.
I know it’s stupid but I’m worried about my next solar return. The past 7 years have been really hard for me,and everything is heavy now either.
    Health issues,problems with debts,house,home enviroment,love,work…
Could you help me checking my SR and natal chart?
    Thanks in advance
    Sophie
