‘Glee’ actor Cory Monteith found dead in hotel in Canada

I heard on the news last evening that actor Cory Monteith was found dead in his hotel room in Vancouver, Canada, when he failed to check out on time.  He was 31 years old.  Police have ruled out foul play.  He was seeing returning to his room alone several hours before his body was discovered.  The cause of death is unknown at this time.  His history of substance abuse raises the possibility that drugs or alcohol may have played a role, or he may have simply died of natural causes.

Monteith was born on May 11, 1982 in Calgary, Canada, time unknown.  His sunrise chart looks like this:

Cory Monteith Sunrise Chart, time unknown

Cory Monteith Sunrise Chart, time unknown

Two things struck me immediately about this chart:

1) The solar eclipse of May 9, 2013, fell almost exactly on his natal Sun and occurred one day before his solar return.  This is a powerful influence.

2) His Mars is stationary and debilitated in Libra (its detriment).  Mars also squares his Moon/Neptune conjunction in the 8th house of death.  I repeatedly find Mars square Neptune in the charts of men who get addicted to substances.

The solar return of the sunrise chart is also quite striking with a strong emphasis on the 8th house of death.  I find that in the absence of a known birth time, the solar return of the sunrise chart usually picks up major themes for the year.  Here is his “sunrise return” for 2013:

Cory Monteith "Sunrise Return" for 2013 with a strong emphasis on the 8th house of death.

Cory Monteith “Sunrise Solar Return” for 2013 with a strong emphasis on the 8th house of death.

The May 9th solar eclipse fell at 19 Tauus 31 almost exactly on his return Mercury and very close to his natal Sun in the 8th house of the sunrise return chart.  The square from Neptune in Pisces in the return 5th of recreation to ASC-ruler Venus in the 8th of death suggests that the recreational use of alcohol or drugs may have played a role in his demise.  On the other hand, Neptune can also symbolize mysterious or occult illnesses.  The autopsy results will be needed to clarify the cause of death.

Addendum July 16:  As the chart suggested, the autopsy report showed the cause of death to be a lethal mixture of heroin and alcohol.

Thanks Tony for this analysis. So sorry to hear that this successful and talented actor died. Interesting that the solar eclipse was so prominent to both return and natal. BTW, can you share what system or software you use for primary directions?

    • There are many software programs that claim to do primary directions. Some are very expensive. One that I especially like is Morinus (freeware) at https://sites.google.com/site/pymorinus/ This program appears to be very accurate in its calculations and has lots of options. Best of all, it doesn’t cost anything!
I like Janus 4 for its display of primaries. It also has the most common options (different keys, with or without latitude, etc.)
I use Solar Fire a lot for other things, but it is very limited in what it offers with regard to primary directions.
Rumen Kolev’s Placidus program is the big guns of primary direction programs. It’s a bit clunky and awkward to use and probably more chock full of stuff than the average astrologer would need or ever use.
I’m sure there are others but these are the ones that come to mind.

I was looking for his natal chart and came across your blog; I was looking for an explanation and cause for the addiction as well. I’m used to seeing Sun/Neptune for addiction; in a chart I’m familiar with I find Sun/Neptune conjunct with a sextile to both Mars and Pluto. I’m a long time student of astrology, but this is the first I’ve heard of a sunrise solar return. You make sense of it anyway. I ran his transits here and chalked it up to Mars square Mars combined with Mars opposite Neptune. http://astro.cafeastrology.com/cgi-bin/astro/compdf?date=05/11/1982&d1hour=12&d1min=0&adjust=0.00&nohouses=true&dformat=-1&date2=07/13/2013&d2hour=22&d2min=51&lang=en Whatever the whys and wherefores are, it’s just really very sad.😦

    • Karen,

I’m reluctant to see the chart or any aspects in the chart as causes of addiction. Instead, I view them as correlations which indicate what the individual may have to deal with during his or her lifetime. That said, I frequently find Mars/Neptune squares in the charts of male addicts. I don’t know whether this finding is unique to the people whose charts I study or whether it has any wider statistical significance.

I’ve heard the Mars-Neptune connection to addiction before, but it’s interesting that you specify males. Have you observed a different pattern in female charts?

Unfortunately I just found out a friend’s daughter is in rehab for some pretty serious drugs. When I checked the ephemeris for her birth date of 9/27/88, I find Mars squaring Neptune.😦 She’s been in rehab for 3 weeks now and they’re recommending 90 days. Have you seen anyone with this aspect conquer it?

P.S. Since the 8th house represents death as well as sex, taxes, inheritances (others’ money) and is naturally ruled by Scorpio, couldn’t it also be the house of transformation? Meaning, didn’t he have as much of a chance to transform himself? Which he tried to do via rehab? I feel like his death is a cruel mistake brought on by the rashness of the Mars transits. On the other hand, the yogi in me says he did transform himself literally. Maybe his soul learned what it came here to learn. I just pray Lea Michele gets herself a good counselor since she’s coming up on her Saturn return. This may be the start of it.

I just discovered this. I study vedic astrology and interestingly came to a similar conclusion – and yet the vedic system doesn’t traditionally use Neptune. The moon’s nodes are what I saw as dominant influences (I like that you tied in the recent eclipse as well). Further, I find your allusion to “mysterious or occult illnesses” fascinating as this also is what I saw as a major contributor to cause of death (or what I can surmise without exact birth time). Thanks for the thoughtful analysis.
