On August 31, 2013, Veteran broadcaster Sir David Frost died at the age of 74 after a suspected heart attack on board a cruise ship where he was scheduled to give a speech. The Guardian said that according to his family (01 Sep 2013), “Sir David Frost died of a heart attack last night aboard the Queen Elizabeth where he was giving a speech.” I checked the NY TIMES which says, ” Mr. Frost died, possibly of a heart attack, while aboard the Queen Elizabeth cruise ship, where he was scheduled to give a speech.” Frost is especially remembered for his revealing interviews with former US President Richard Nixon and the Hollywood movie based on these interviews. Here is his natal chart:
It is always instructive to see how astrological symbolism is reflected in the chart of the demise of a public figure.
Saturn is the traditional ruler, and Uranus is the modern ruler, of his 8th house of death. Saturn in the 10th suggests death in a public place, perhaps while working at his career. Saturn also rules the 9th of long-distance travel, as traditionally would have been done via a sea voyage.
Mercury rules his 4th house of the end of life. Neptune, god of the oceans, conjoins the 4th cusp — symbolically appropriate to his death on a cruise ship. Mercury in the 10th eventually applies to Saturn, again suggesting death in a public place, perhaps involving speaking (Mercury) or some career-related activity.
Mars occupies his 6th house of bodily ailments. Eyeballing the chart, we see that the clockwise motion of the sky after birth will carry Mars from the 6th house to the 4th late in his life by primary direction. We might wonder whether 6th-ruler Mars will oppose 8th-ruler Saturn around the time of his demise. Using Morinus software set for Placidus semi-arc, the Naibod time-key and mundane directions, we find the following directions in effect in 2013:
All these directions appear to be symbolically connected to his demise.
- Jupiter rules his 6th of illness. Mercury rules his 4th of the end of life.
- The Sun is a natural signifier of the heart and it rules his natal 2nd (income) and 3rd (lectures).
- Pluto occupies his 1st and is a signifier of his body. Uranus is the modern ruler of his 8th house.
- Mars occupies his 6th of illness. Saturn rules his 8th house of death.
- Neptune rules the seas and is the modern ruler of his MC.
Our hunch that Mars might be opposing Saturn at the time of his death is born out. Mars moves by primary motion to oppose Saturn, with the Naibod time-measure, on 13 October 2013 — a date close enough to 31 August 2013 to be considered a “hit” in the method of primary directions.
For modern astrologers, the clockwise (primary) motion of the chart after birth will carry Pluto in the 1st (his body) to Uranus in the 11th (Uranus ruling his 8th of death and 9th of voyages) with an arc of 73.186, which in Naibod’s measure indicates July 7, 2013.
The midpoint of the direction of Pluto to Uranus and of Mars to the opposition of Saturn, the two primary directions most indicative of his death, occurs by Naibod’s key on August 23, 2013 about a week before his actual demise.
Frost’s birth data is rated ‘A’ in the Rodden system, which means that it is considered accurate but is from a person’s memory rather than a written birth record.
P.S.: I’ve been putting together some notes on primary directions with the idea of publishing them as an e-book. If anyone would be interested in such a text, please leave a comment below.
ADDENDUM: Pamela Gibson in her comment noted the transit of Pluto over Frost’s natal Mars in the 6th at the time of his death. Traditionally, astrologers used solar and lunar return as well as transits to time when a primary direction was likely to manifest. Here is a chart for Frost’s current lunar return at the time of his voyage on 31 August 2013:
