The Most Common Birthdays in the USA

A couple of interesting articles have tabulated the most common birthdays in the United States for the period from 1973 to 1999.  These figures are influenced by the fact that many mothers choose to induce delivery and thus pick the date of birth around the time the baby comes to term (between 38 and 42 weeks in the womb).

The average human gestation period is usually given as 266 days or 38 weeks.  The “standard” length of pregnancy is given as 40 weeks (280 days), which is calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period.

Most common: September 16 is the most popular birthday, and December 25 and February 29 are least popular

The above graph appeared in dailymail.co.uk.

According to the New York Times, the most common days to be born in the USA are September 16th  and September 9th.  If you follow the link to the NY Times, you can look up your birthday and see how common it is.

The most common Sun positions associated with these birthdays in the USA are around the 24th and 18th degrees of Virgo the Virgin in the tropical zodiac.  If we allow 266 days from conception to birth, the two most common times for conception are December 17th and December 24th, just in time for Christmas.  The Sun on these two days lies in the 26th degree of Sagittarius and the 4th degree of Capricorn, respectively.  Sagittarius likes to sow wild oats, and Capricorn the Goat has a reputation for being randy.

The least common birthday in the USA (not counting Feb 29th of leap years) occurs on Christmas Day (December 25th) with the Sun in the 5th degree of Capricorn in the tropical zodiac.  This makes the least common date of conception around April 3rd with the Sun in the 15th degree of Aries.  I’m not sure what any of this means astrologically.   Mars rules mid-Aries, the Sun in exalted there, Mercury has his term or bound, and it is the face and triplicity  of the Sun.  Perhaps the heat of the Sun and Mars, combined with the neutrality of Mercury, make this region too parched to be fertile.

For easy reference, here is the list quoted in the New York Times.  Find your month of birth in the middle column and you day of birth in the right-hand column.  Then look to the column labeled “Rank” and you will see how common is your birthday.  For example, I was born on Sept. 3, so my birthday ranks 92.  Dividing 92 by 366 (maximum # of days in a year), we get .2514, so my birthday ranks among the 25.14% most common days of birth in the nation (USA).
