Cocaine amidst the Stars

Many years ago a young man I knew developed a serious problem with cocaine addiction.  His life became centered around procuring his drug of choice.  He resorted to stealing money and goods from friends and loved ones to support his habit.  Fortunately, he entered rehab and was able to control his habit and turn his life around.  At one point in this process he asked me to look at his natal chart.  The most prominent aspect was an almost exact square between Neptune and Mars.

As a result of this experience, I began to notice Mars square Neptune is other charts and to ask whether a problem with addiction to drugs or alcohol was symbolized by this particular configuration.  Over time, I began to call the Mars/Neptune square the “cocaine addiction” aspect.  To be clear, having this aspect does not mean that the native is destined to become addicted to alcohol or drugs, but it does seem to indicate a higher risk than normal for developing a drug habit, often centered on cocaine.

This morning I noticed a headline that a young Hollywood actor ” mysteriously ended up in a very bad area of downtown L.A. just after midnight Sunday … and ended up getting violently socked in the mouth by a sketchy transient …”  The article went on to say that former child actor Zac Efron had been in rehab twice in the past year for cocaine addiction and that he had broken his jaw last November under mysterious circumstances.

Given Efron’s public acknowldgement of his cocaine abuse, I wondered whether he was born under Mars square Neptune, as had so many of the cocaine users whose charts I have studied over the years.  Fortunately, his birth time is known and his data is ironically rated as “AA.”  Here is his chart according to the data on AstroDataBank:

Zac Efron, natal chart rated "AA" with prominent Mars square Neptune.

Zac Efron, natal chart rated “AA” with prominent Mars square Neptune.

His transits for the time of the attack (shortly after midnight 24 March 2014) are quite striking.  Here is his natal chart with the transits for 0:15 AM superimposed:

Zac Efron punched shortly after midnight 24 March 2014 in a seedy area of LA.

Zac Efron punched shortly after midnight 24 March 2014 in a seedy area of LA.

At the time Efron was punched in the face, transiting Mars was conjunct his natal Sun, and transiting Moon (emotional needs) was conjunct his natal Neptune (intoxicating drugs) in his 12th house of self-undoing.

In addition, transiting Pluto (major transformation) was conjunct his natal ASC (head, face, body in general).  With the grand cardinal cross of 22 April 2014 hitting his natal ASC quite directly, Zac Efron can expect quite a bit of further upheaval in his life over the next several months.  With transiting Pluto hovering on his ASC, Mr. Efron will emerge from this grand cross a significantly changed person.

I’d like to know what aspects were occurring during the time the young man you knew turned his life around. In Zac’s chart, I think he has two opportunities to get himself in line with the transiting retrograde Mars sextile his natal 12th house Uranus.

  2. Sandra,
That chart goes back about 20 years. I was using different software then and can’t find his birth data in my files. At the time I saw him he was in his late 20s, so he is probably in his 50s now. My recollection is that he was born in the late 1950s, and I did his chart in the late 1980s. It may be in a file of papers somewhere in my basement or it may have been misplaced when I moved to a new house about 17 years ago. I remember very clearly, however, the Mars/Neptune square in his natal chart.

    thanks for the article tony.

i have noticed the mars/neptune combo in drug dependency issues. it is just a generalization, but it seems to show up more frequently then not. devoting ones energy to a form of escapism would seem to describe these 2 planets in hard aspect to one another especially. unless this is offset by another part of the chart, it can weigh on the chart and push it in the direction towards one of avoidance and escapism..

  4. James,
Agreed. It is a generalization. Symbolically it may be that Mars (excitement, passion, the adrenaline rush) when tied by hard aspect to Neptune (drugs, alcohol, fantasy, illusion, escapism, intoxication) correlates with the rush an addict feels when getting high. Perhaps Mars/Neptune is a marker of a certain type of dopaminergic pathway in the mesolimbic system of the human brain.

  5. Fascinating!

My personal observation is that addiction is present when Pluto strongly aspects personal planets, while the Mars/Neptune contacts are the frustrations that open up people to drug use and escapism in general. (Why the cocaine connection, I can only guess. Others have already made some interesting observations in this thread.) For some time, I’ve been friends with various recovering alcoholics. The aspect they all have in common has been Pluto either conjunct or square the Sun, Moon or Venus. In Efron’s chart, he has a Venus/Pluto conjunction.

Very interesting the observation on Uranos square Mars. I was checking an astral chart of a friend who was a cocaine addict, and noticed that in his chart, Mars is conjunct Uranus in Libra, and I interpreted it as a rebellious personality, fitting the drug user stereotype. However, what is interesting is that this person started using cocaine on the same month mars was transiting his natal uranus/mars conjunction and Uranus itself was in Capricorn squaring Mars in Libra. The square in cardinals could indicate disposition to start new addictions…. So, maybe the square is also valid for transits.
